FlipBook easier to own than ever.
SPEED
When it
comes to getting your work done, faster is always better. And
FlipBook 4 is faster than ever.
Scenes
Open Faster
FlipBook 4 has been optimized to open your scenes faster.
FlipBook 4 can open a scene with 500 frames and 10 levels in 3
seconds on a fast computer. Compare that to the 8 seconds it
takes Photoshop to open, without any images at all, and you get
an idea of the speed in FlipBook 4.
Move
Between Images Faster
To make painting and clean-up even faster FlipBook now has "HOT
KEYS" to move you immediately to the next or the previous
drawing in your level regardless of how many empty cels are
between drawings.
Scenes
Composite Faster
Small scenes composite in real-time and you don't really need to
get any faster than that because the compositing will stay ahead
of the playback so it's always done as soon as you want to see
it. But larger, or more complex scenes can take longer so
FlipBook 4 offers several options to make compositing go faster.
For example, by only compositing every second pixel FlipBook can
composite a scene about 3 times faster with only a slight
degradation in image quality.
AVI
Files Import Faster
Importing AVI files to be used as backgrounds or for reference
while drawing is much faster than it used to be and FlipBook 4
can import the soundtrack as well as the images.
Editing
the Xsheet is Faster
Again, this was never an issue in small scenes but if you had a
big scene moving around in the xsheet would start to slow down.
FlipBook 4 makes moving around and editing the xsheet in big
scenes much faster than it used to be.
PLAYBACK
Full
Screen Playback
FlipBook 4 lets you play your scenes back FULL SCREEN so you can
see your animation clearly without all the extra tool bars, tool
boxes, palettes and xsheet.
WYSIWYG
Video Output
Real-time WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) preview lets
you see your animation on TV and record it directly to videotape
while you watch it play in FlipBook. These days lots of video
cards have a composite or S-Video output to TV and Windows lets
you extend your computer screen onto the TV. FlipBook 4 takes
advantage of these new features by creating an extra playback
window that you can drag onto your TV and if you have a VCR
hooked up you can record exactly what you see while you play
your scenes in FlipBook.
Mid-Scene Start and Stop Points Make Working in Long Scenes
Faster and Easier
When you're doing a 30-second commercial you could have 900
frames in one scene. If you are only working on a small section
of 100 frames in the middle you don't want to wait for the other
800 frames to play before you can see the part you're interested
in. And if your scene has lots of levels you don't have to wait
for the extra frames to composite. Now FlipBook 4 lets you set
temporary start and stop points within a scene to restrict the
playback and the compositing to the area you're working on.
DRAWING
& PAINTING
Tablet
Support
The traditional animators, that have been around a while, still
prefer drawing with pencil and paper, but many of the new up and
coming animators are learning to draw right on the computer with
a tablet or even a mouse. FlipBook 4 supports graphics tablets
so you can still get the look and feel of a pencil while drawing
directly into the computer and saving the time it takes to scan
or shoot your drawings as well as the cost of paper and pencils.
New,
Improved Line Quality
FlipBook has always done a great job of making scanned lines
look great on screen. But with the addition of tablet support we
wanted to make the lines that you draw with FlipBook look better
too.
FlipBook 4 also has a
new type of pencil line that actually looks like it was drawn by
a pencil on paper and it gets darker as you trace over it, just
like pencil and paper. This line is perfect for sketching ruff
drawings and getting a feel for the animation.
More
Tool Attributes and Easier Access
Now that the drawing and painting tools have more features, we
thought we'd make it easier to access and control them all. So
now you can access the Tool Attributes dialog by holding the
mouse button down on the tool in the tool box, just like
Photoshop. And you can leave the tool attributes dialog open
while you work for quick and easy changes as needed.
Line,
Circle & Rectangle Drawing Tools
Since we've made the lines look better we thought we give you
some more drawing tools as well. So now FlipBook 4 has tools for
drawing straight lines, perfect circles and easy rectangles.
Perimeter Cursors
It's always nice to be able to see what part of the image is
going to be affected before you actually make the change. The
cursor in FlipBook now shows you exactly which pixels will be
changed before you make your changes. So you know ahead of time
whether you need to make the brush or pencil size larger or
smaller.
Adjust
the Brush and Pencil Tools Size with the + and - Keys.
And we've made it easier to change the brush and pencil size
too. Now you can just press the + and - keys on the keypad while
you're painting to increase or decrease the size of the tool.
Better
Zoom Control
We also thought you'd like some better Zoom control so now you
can drag the Zoom tool to surround the part of the image that
you want to zoom in on and as soon as you let go you get to see
and edit exactly what you want.
New Way
to Zoom Out
Even though it is a clear violation of the Windows standards,
we've given in to peer pressure and we've followed Adobe's
example. So now you can hold the Control key or the Alt key down
and click with the Magnifying glass to zoom out while editing
images in FlipBook.
Select,
Cut, Copy & Paste Within Images
And now that
you're drawing more in FlipBook 4 we thought we'd give you some
more editing tools too. This new feature makes animation much
easier for the aspiring animator and the pro. Now you can cut or
copy any part of an image from one cel and paste into back into
the same frame or into any other frame. And when you're pasting
it you can scale it up or down and even rotate it. So you could
copy a drawing to the next frame (by pressing the F7 key) and
then cut and paste any the part of the drawing that needs to be
repositioned. Or you scan your model sheets into an inactive
level and copy pieces from the model sheets and paste them right
into the scene to save drawing time.
Photoshop Editing From Within FlipBook
Now you can use Photoshop, or whatever your favorite paint
program is, to create and edit backgrounds and overlays. And you
can also use it to add special painting effects to cels as well.
Pick
Colors From the BG to Add to the Palette
Now you can pick colors from the background and add them
directly to your palette, making it easy to get exactly the
colors you want in the palette. You could even scan a color
model in as a background and create the entire palette by just
clicking around on the background.
De-Speckle Action
Scanning images often come in with little specks where dust or
dirt was on the scanner's glass or where little bits of eraser
were left on the image. And FlipBook has always provided a way
for you to easily clean up these specks. But now it's even more
powerful because you can select a whole range of cels and
FlipBook will despeckle them all as a batch process with a
single command.
Faster
Cel Clean-Up
And if the De-Speckle Action isn't enough to get your cels
clean, you can use the Select tool to select a rectangular area
and FlipBook will let you erase everything inside or outside
the selected area. AND you can make the selection box
stay in the window when you change from one drawing to the next.
So you can erase that area in as many frames as you want and all
you have to do press 2 keys.
Multi-Level Painting for Limited Animation
We're still looking for a better name for this feature but we
didn't want the lack of a great name to keep you from getting to
use such a great feature. Today's budgets are forcing more
animators to do limited animation, with the character spread
across multiple levels to speed up the drawing process. But
duplicating lines on multiple levels looks bad and trying to
paint right up to the edge, when the edge is on a different
level can be pretty tough. So FlipBook uses it's Light Table to
let you see the lines in all the related levels while you're
painting. The current level is displayed in its actual color and
all of the other lines that help make up the character are
displayed in pink. When you click to fill inside the black lines
the fill stops when it hits a pink line from another level. This
makes painting multi-level drawings a piece of cake and "paint
to" lines are a thing of the past.
AutoFinish
AutoFinish is a very powerful feature that can save you hours of
painting time. Once you've painted the bigger areas in your
drawings just press F2 and FlipBook will paint the rest of the
image for you. It does it by painting all of the remaining
areas, that are enclosed by pencil lines, with the nearest
color. So once you've painted enough of the big areas to make
sure the unpainted areas have the correct color nearby FlipBook
can automatically finish the painting.
QuickErase
This new feature works with the Fill Tool to let you erase
something you've painted with a quick and easy Right-Click of
the mouse. It really comes in handy when used with the
AutoFinish feature above. Sometimes your drawings will have
areas that are enclosed by pencil lines but aren't supposed to
be painted. For example, a character standing with its hand on
its hip could have an area enclosed by the arm and the body that
isn't supposed to be painted. A quick Right-Click in the area
erases the paint and leaves the image perfect.
Auto Gap
Closure
Sometimes when you're filling an area, the paint spills out
through a gap in the line and floods the entire image. FlipBook
4 has a new feature to deal with that. When you see that the
paint has flooded out you just hit the Escape key and FlipBook
will undo the fill, close the gap and re-fill the frame - all in
an instant.
Leak
Locater
If the gap is too big for Auto Gap Closer you can just grab the
Fill Slider and as you drag it the fill reverses until you
locate the leak.
Stop
Leak
Once you've found the point of the leak instead of having to go
to the Tool Box and change tools now all you have to do is press
the Alt key and the Fill Tool turns into a Pencil Tool so you
can instantly close the gap and then let go of the Alt key to
Fill without leaking.
Multiple
Levels of Undo
/ Redo
And last but not least in our list of painting and editing
enhancements is multiple levels of undo. Now you can undo the
last 20 painting steps. Each time you click on undo takes you
further and further back through the steps you've taken to
create your image. And if you decide that you've gone back too
far just turn around and start retracing your steps forward with
the multiple redo feature. Now you're really free to explore
your creativity.
AUDIO
Drag and
Drop Soundtracks
Now you
can just drag the WAV file for a soundtrack onto the xsheet and
it will pop up the sound dialog to let you sync it and either
enable or disable it.
Maintain
Sound Sync During Editing
FlipBook 4 keeps track of
your edits in the xsheet and will adjust the soundtrack to
maintain synchronization unless you delete the frame that the
audio is synched to.
Import
Audio from
AVI files
FlipBook now imports the soundtrack along with the video from
AVI files. This makes it much easier to import live action video
to use as a background, adding your animation in the foreground
to make your home movies more interesting. It's also great when
using the live action video for reference while animating over
the top of it.
Save
Sound File in FlipBook Scene File
Now you have the option of saving the sound file within the
FlipBook scene file so you don't have to keep track of it
separately. But you can still link an external sound file to
your scene and even remove the sound file once it's been
appended to the scene file.
XSHEET
Append
Levels in the Xsheet
Now
you can add new levels to an xsheet to make room for more
characters, props, overlays or whatever.
Append
Frames in the Xsheet
It has always been possible to
add
frames to a scene but in FlipBook 4 it's easier than ever.
Now it's
Easier to Break the Link Between Multiple Copies of the Same
Image
Since drawings are often used more than once in a scene,
FlipBook normally only saves one copy of the image and uses it
as often as is needed. This also means that making a change to
any one of the copies automatically updates them all so you
don't have to do each one separately. But sometimes you may not
want the other copies to be changed so FlipBook 4 lets you
easily break the link between multiple copies of the same image.
CAPTURE
Better
Image Quality for Video Capture
FlipBook 4 analyzes multiple frames of video to significantly
improve image quality by dropping out unwanted video noise
(specks).
Save
Capture Settings
Some of the newer capture cards default to settings that aren't
what today's animators want. FlipBook 4 can override their
default settings so the next time you go to capture images
everything should be just the way you left it last time.
IMPORT
Multi-File Import
Now you can highlight multiple files to be imported into your
FlipBook scene all at once. This is particularly helpful if
you're importing photo-rotos to do animation over live action
like in Looney Tunes, Back In Action. It's also a big help when
you're importing a sequence 3D files into the background or the
foreground to be integrated into your FlipBook scene.
IMAGE
WINDOW
New,
Bigger Tool Bars w/ Reactive Icons
Screen resolutions are getting higher and higher and although
Windows lets you adjust the size of the text to make it easy to
read, at higher resolution the icons start getting pretty small.
FlipBook 4 has new, larger icons that automatically scale down
when they are used in low resolution monitors and up when they
are in high res settings so they're always easy to see and easy
to click on..
New,
Bigger VCR Controls
The VCR Control Panel has also been enlarged to make it easier
to use. And new buttons have been added to improved the look and
readability.
SCANNING
Automatic Timing When Scanning Over Roughs
FlipBook 4 can automatically place your scanned drawings into
the same positions in the xsheet as your rough drawings so you
don't have to redo the timing when you progress from roughs to
clean-ups.
PRINTING
Print
Registration Marks
Now you can print your images with registration marks so you can
post punch them and put them on your peg bar to use for
reference.
PORTABILITY
Transfer
Your License and Your Files to any Computer
Dongles have long been used by many leading software companies
to prevent software piracy. In this case the software will only
run while the dongle is attached to the PC but you can move the
dongle (and therefore the software license) from machine to
machine as needed.
DigiCel
now offers dongles to our customers who want to be able to run
FlipBook on more than one computer. But our dongles are actually
32MB USB hard drives. These '32MB dongles' not only let you move
your copy of FlipBook from one PC to another, but they also let
you take your files with you.
Animated
GIF Movie Output
People often like to post their animations on the internet. But
sometimes even with lots of compression the files are just too
big. So we've added support for animated GIF files, which are
usually quite a bit smaller so they download and play faster.
And to get the best possible results, you can choose between
standard or optimized color palettes. And for stuff like sending
a pencil test in an email you can even select 16 or 256 shades
of gray.
EASE OF
USE
New Scene Are Easier to Make
Creating new scenes is easier in FlipBook
4. In most cases all you have to do is set the frame size. The
rest can all be done later and it can be changed at any time.
You don't even need to name it. That gets taken care when you
save it.
Revert
to the Last Saved Version of a Scene
We've added a Revert option to the File menu
Set
Frame Rate During Export
We've added the ability to confirm or set the Frame Rate while
you're in the Export/Publish dialog box so in case you were
experimenting with different rates during playback, you can
always make sure that the final output is the rate you want.
